In the late 16th century, it was taken over by the Mackenzies, a powerful Highland clan. However, in 1602, the castle was besieged and subsequently destroyed by the Macdonalds, who used gunpowder to blow it up, leaving it in ruins. Today, the remains of Strome Castle are a popular historical site, attracting visitors interested in Scotland's turbulent clan history.
