Variety: Field-Bred Smitty is a black and white, field-bred Springer boy with a full, sweeping tail, which he loves to flaunt whenever he gets the chance. At 53 pounds, he's on the taller side for the breed. We estimate him to be 2 – 3 years old. Like most young adolescents, he's got tons of energy, and loves to play fetch with either a ball or a squeaky toy. We would suggest that once adopted, he be enrolled in a basic obedience course, since, like many of the dogs that we get into rescue, it appears that no one took the time to teach him much beyond “Sit”. Actually, we recommend this to all our adopters since this is a terrific bonding experience for you and your new dog. Smitty is very smart and eager to please and would make an excellent student. Although he's initially excited, and therefore, very energetic when you first meet him, he quickly settles down and will even roll over for some belly rubs, and if you sit on the floor, he will even crawl onto your lap and cuddle. He also takes treats very nicely. Unfortunately, due to a shortage of foster homes, Smitty has to stay in boarding. While we try to visit with him as much as possible and work on his skills, it's just not the same as being in a home where he would receive all the love and attention that he needs. Although we think that Smitty is housetrained, all of our dogs that are kept in boarding may need a refresher course in this department when they eventually get to live in a home environment.
