Album Info:
This mare - this mare this mare this mare. SIGH. I met her 4-5 years ago when I first had Teddy in training. Teddy was a 4-5 year old then. I boarded him somewhere that did not feed him enough and I had to supplement him a lot - this mare was so skinny that she would lay down and just sit in the dirt while the other horses ate - too weak to fight for food. I started pulling her out of the pasture - her owner in Rome most of the year and feeding her with Teddy. She had BAD scratches all the way up her legs. She was at least 17 hands and looked to be 35 years old. Her legs also would stock up completely at times. So I started scrubbing the scratches and putting things on them. When I finally met the owner, I learned this was his first horse and he really did not have a clue what he was doing. So I made a deal with him that I would take care of her - feed her supps every day and tend to her needs. Her feet were long - heels so low they bled. So since she had a front left leg that was totally crooked and pointed in, I said - lets pull her shoes and just keep her toes back and help her get a more natural foot for her. Her tripping stopped. I then moved her to a barn that allowed us to use as much hay as needed for her. She gained weight with that, the supps and Forco supplement and in 3-4 months already looked like a new horse. She no longer looked 35 but closer to the 12 years she was. For the next 2-3 years, she went wherever I went. I foudn out she had once been a jumper and with her crooked leg - she had been arthritic early - and I went through a season of really bad allergies where she looked like an itchy popcorn ball as her immune system righted itself and got healthy. With shoes off - good barefoot trimming and TLC to cure her ulcers - inside and in her mouth - keeping her in when the sun was out harshly because she had melanomas - feeding her so she would not impact in case the melanomas got too big - and keeping the scratches in control - she was a gorgeous big grey mare people using ogled when they visited! Very different from the diverted looks people gave her when they first met her! Now that I have moved to the other side of the US, she is in the care of a young man who bought Kobe and prayerfully she will be alright. My mom IS SO CUTE on this mare!
