Well, neither of mine suffocated, though of course it's always a possibility. We each do what we feel is right for our horses, I wouldn't go to the trouble of breeding a foal only to take a more significant risk than absolutely necessary during birth and risk losing mare or foal.

just wondering cos i work with foals and we are always told that you should neva have a foal born on shavings because it can clog the airways when the foal takes its first breath and then unfortunately suffocate it

The only bit of concrete was by the door (which of course was where the mare finally foaled) but the rest of the bed was very deep. Straw is usually considered preferable to shavings, but this is the second foal I've had born on shavings and both mares and foals were fine - I actually found the shavings provided better coverage on the floor than straw when the mare was digging up her bed when in labour and was certainly easier to straighten up.
