    • Carol,Congratulations on your mustangs! There are Kigers in Washington but NOT in the wild. ALL Kigers originate from only the Kiger and Riddle HMAs in the Steens Mts of SE Oregon. All Kigers must be able to trace their lineage to horses that originated in one of those two HMAs. Captured horses will have BLM brands and papers indicating origin. Captive bred offspring must be DNA tested to confirm their parentage/ancestry to known previously DNA tested Kigers. This is not a breed that if they look a certain way or have dun coloration can be registered as Kiger. They have to prove ancestry traced back to Kiger or Riddle HMAs. These horses are believed to be decendents of Spanish horses brought to Oregon by the Conquistadors, and were found in very rugged, isolated, mountains and therefore had limited access to other blood, which allowed them to remain relatively pure. You may indeed have Spanish Mustangs if they have similar characteristics, but they can't be Kigers due to their origin. Thank you for your interest! I would love to see your mustangs too! Hope that you will share some photos, and stories about your progress with them. Happy Trails, Linda

    • Dear Linda, I really enjoyed your pictures. I recently aquired a mustang filly and colt taken from the Yakima, WA Indian Reservation. Apparently they became seperated from their mothers during a round up, of which was to slaughter the horses for meat to sell. They are thought to be about 7 and 8 months old. The filly has many of the Kiger traits. Do you have any idea if there are Kigers in Washington state. I heard there were 5,000 wild mustangs in that area. Thanks so much, Carol
